Item:1 year of increased network speed on main webserver
Purchase/Donation date10 Dec 2010 | 20:15:59 UTC
DescriptionOne of the biggest concerns has always been upload capacity on the main webserver. It sends out data to both clients, the artists and to the community as a whole. By adding more outgoing bandwidth it is possible to do more faster.

42 euro was donated directly to this with 3 euro in fees and exchanges covered by the project administrator.
Original approximation of cost130 Euro

Item:3-year registration of .com, .net and .org domain names
Purchase/Donation date21 Jul 2008 | 5:00:00 UTC
DescriptionAn online renderfarm needs a domain name - and we have renderfarming.net/.org/.com as our primary one. The old domain (burp.boinc.dk) still points to the same site as well.

172 euro were donated directly to this. 8 euro in paypal fees and exchanges were covered by the project administrator.

Item:Replacement motherboard and CPU
Purchase/Donation date1 Dec 2007 | 5:50:00 UTC
DescriptionThe 18th and 20th of Nov 2007 the main web and database server stalled. No software indications could point at any clear reason why this happened and at the 25th the server motherboard suddenly decided to die and to take the CPU with it.

Through an incredible effort by the community this event did not keep BURP offline for long. After a fundraising lasting only a single week the 442 euro had been found to buy new server components.
Not only did the replacement server parts get the project back online - the server became more powerful and had better future upgrade possibilities than the old faulty hardware had.
The new server has an additional 1GB of ram, dual core processor instead of hyperthreaded processor, 3GHz core clock instead of 2.4GHz and a faster memory system. It has proven to be insanely fast and has not only replaced the old system but also improved the speed of the day-to-day maintenance tasks and weekly maintenance tasks greatly.
Of the 442 euro that these items cost the 354 were donated directly to the cause of fixing the system, another 88 euro were donated through the "I don't care"-category. As usual the additional 21,8 euro in fees and currency exchanges were covered by the project administrator.

Item:High-speed storage drive: 150GB WD Raptor
Purchase/Donation date3 Jul 2007 | 16:03:06 UTC
DescriptionFor a long time the database server was having issues while more than 2 sessions were rendering simultaneously. The system would spend most of the time waiting for the diskdrives to deliver or store data and starve the processes running on it. This was very obvious during May and June 2007 where everything was slowed down considerably. With this upgrade the data throughput is expected to be trice the previous amount.

131 Euro were donated directly by the community to the purpose of buying this high speed disk drive - an additional 79 Euro were found in the "don't care" category. The 13.33 Euro in paypal fees and exchanges were covered by the project administrator.

Item:Maxtor Diamond max 10 300GB harddrive X 2
Purchase/Donation date4 Dec 2005 | 12:08:45 UTC
DescriptionOne of the really big issues when it comes to handling large scale 3D rendering is storage space. With this 0.6TB storage kit it is possible to store quite a few full length animations.
The kit will be used for longterm storage of the produced results. Originally a 300GB kit was selected for this upgrade, however this nice kit came along that could double the extra storage space for only about 15.5 more Euro. After a short votation on the message board the large kit was selected.

Of the 245.50 Euro that this item was purchased for, 200 were directly donated whereas 45.50 Euro were found in the "I don't care" category. The additional 11.57 Euro in Paypal fees and currency exchanges were covered by the project administrator.

Item:Extra 2GB of high-speed memory for DB server
Purchase/Donation date15 Nov 2005 | 12:50:02 UTC
DescriptionWith this 2GB high-speed-memory upgrade the main database server will now have a total of 3GB RAM and all its RAM slots occupied.
This will be sufficient to render even very complex sessions with a lot of frames (the database needs to keep track of the in-progress workunits and for complex sessions each frame can be split into several workunits, ie. there's a lot of things to keep track of). Similarly rendering a lot of sessions in parallel should now no longer cause the database to fail.
Also the process that combines parts into the final image will now be able to run much faster since it can keep everything in memory with no need to swap data to the harddrives.

The memory cost was 414,26 Euro plus an additional 26,38 Euro in Paypal fees and currency exchange. The fees were covered by the project administrator and the actual cost was covered entirely by the BURP community in an amazing donation effort over just a couple of months. 181 Euro were directly given to the cause of this memory upgrade while 233,26 Euro were donated through general donations over time.
The users who contributed to this are honored in the list bellow - ordered by the time of their first donation to this item.

Item:1 year of 4 times as fast network on main webserver
Purchase/Donation date3 May 2005 | 17:37:19 UTC
DescriptionThis donation made the main webserver able to transfer data four times faster in the outgoing direction than before the donation. It seems we are going to get a bit more than a year for the money - great!
The most visible effects are (much needed) improved response times for the webpages but also faster uploads to the mirrors - which again leads to better and lower submission-to-result times. Also this donation was the first ever completed donation in the history of BURP.
Even more incredible is that it was donated by a single user!

Item:Additional longterm animation storage
Purchase/Donation date---
DescriptionStorage is always an issue - especially when rendered frames can use as much as 30MB per frame. By expanding the storage on the main server with a pluggable storage array consisting of a 4-bay DAS supporting up to 8TB we can keep rendering without worrying about running short on storage. 72 euro were donated directly to this. Additionally 23+#IDCARE-72-23-dns-net euro were donated in the "I don't care"-category and anonymously directly to our PayPal account. #FEES euro in fees and exchanges were covered by the project administrator.
