\"one of the decisions I made very early on in this project was that there would be no commercials or ads on the website, the screensaver nor in the content that can be downloaded from the website. In other words everything is to be completely \"clean\" and not follow the trend that other sites seem to go towards.\" ~Janus

Well I was thinking, I wouldn\'t mind Google ads, as long as they were out of the way, maybe in a \'bubble\' below the Status \'bubble\' as long as all the money made went to the project... Possibly for new drives for the servers, faster servers, what ever Janus sees fit, as Long as it goes to the burp project. My logic being I am not really suffering from ads if I know I\'m directly benefiting from them.

Just a thought, what do you all think?

The no-ads decision was made very early in the design process of the project. The decision was based both on the points below as well as experience from other projects. You are of course free to discuss it.

I personally dislike ads for the following reasons:

  • They distract from the main purpose and content of a page
  • They take up valuable space in the layout
  • They are typically served from overloaded servers, making pages load slower
  • They often employ heavy use of CSS layering, Flash or similar smart content. Most browsers do not handle this using stream-rendering - which again makes pages display slower.
  • They cannot be fetched in a single HTTP1.1 request from this server but requires at least one separate DNS query and connection to another server - again, slowing down the load times.
  • They are generally annoying
  • They do not generate nearly as much money as you would think

It\'s hard to explain this but if this project had all kinds of ads showing then I\'d die a little bit inside whenever I visited it...

So to repeat myself, that\'s a definitive \"no\": There will be no ads on the website, in the screensaver nor in any of the content that can be downloaded from the website.

Indeed I have the same issues with my site, I am refusing to put ads on it, but my site doesn\'t have the tendency to kill computers with 1000 db queries every second ;-)

I am just trying to find some way to help those donations, but as a middle schooler I can\'t really donate to the project. For the project to sustain itself would mean either commercial renders (I know it is coming in that plan somewhere, but for now...), or some other source of income. So no ads, no commercial rendering yet...

The only thing I can think of now is that some people would PAY to get into burp now that signing up is closed, but requiring a donation seems... wrong? it goes against (my view of) open source, and all that good stuff.

hrm. I just don\'t like the idea of Janus paying from his pocket for a project that he does for the sake of other people, Istvan.

I assume the lockout on new accounts is because of the drive failures?

No, it has been closed for a while. A few months at least. I\'m still thinking about what we could do for some $$...
