That\'s actually a good question since BURP grew out of a development checkout of BOINC back in early 2004. I guess the date to really consider it \"alive\" was June 16th 2004 - the date of the very first test to run through the system.

You can follow the very early development in this forum post - it\'s actually quite interesting to see how much the idea has changed since, while some things are still completely the same.

Cool! thanks!

does this still apply:

If the distributed network is not already busy rendering you can use it without having any points at all. If another render is in progress you need to have at least XXXX points to start yours (XXXX determined by the size of your animation).

I realize the system we are using now will probably be mostly re-written before beta, but I was wondering if that is still in the plan?

Yes, somewhat. The new system will ditch the idea of priorities and introduce a new and more dynamic and easy-to-understand method of balancing called \"boost\".

If noone is using the farm you can get 100% of it without any boost. If another session is rendering you will only get 50% without boost - but you may spend points on boosting your session to get more than those 50%.
Whereas priority was/is a static thing you can change the boost on-the-run. For instance it would make sense to boost the first few frames so that you can get a quick preview of how the session is going to look when it\'s done.

That would be nice. What about if both people pay for some boost? is it auction style where who ever pays more gets it, or is it you get the percentage of the boost that you use in the sum of all of the other people\'s boost? Also, if you are the only person using the farm will there be any charge, or is it free?

This system makes more sense to me, as it solves my question about priorites, sleeping sessions and all of that stuff, Istvan.

We will have to try out different methods and see which one is best.

OK, well I think it would be nice to allow new people to render for free as long as there is nobody else rendering.

another problem would be that if you didn\'t have many credits some of the \'bigger guys\' could upload sessions and yours could remain cued un-started for months. especially if for example I got my dominoes sessions to a few months on the render farm, and I uploaded two versions, and threw tons of credit at them: nobody else would be able to render unless they had enough credit. Then it might snowball because people who have been waiting might get impatient and boost theirs, so the person with the least ability would be at the end of the line. Any ideas on how to avoid this?

Man, you\'re really expecting big things... I think most of us would be happy to have work on a fairly regular basis.

Indeed. I\'m still waiting to get my first 100k full here... ;-)

I realize that what I am saying here is far off, but in the blender IRC chat alone there are people who would love to use burp for some long projects. Once closed testing is opened up I\'m guessing there will be a flood of people submitting renders. As I understand it is the purpose of closed testing to prepare a system capable of handling this. For now I am also happy just crunching, but later on BURP will be used for rendering projects. I am also the type who likes feedback on my work, so I can make it as close to perfect as I can, so I try to help others in the same way.

Janus, How will commercial rendering fit into this system?

I guess I\'m close to one of its first users BURP member since 10 Oct 2004 ;)
