Any chance of getting checkpointing in the future? I lost some WU\'s because of Windows Update, my lappie rebooted and I was right up against the due date/time for the WU\'s.

I just discovered the same. My puters, especially my work laptop, go off too frequently to crunch units with no checkpointing. Call me when it\'s in.

You should really place the feature request at a Blender development site. BURP and BOINC actually do support checkpointing - the Blender renderer doesn\'t.
Agreed, this could eventually be a nice subproject to implement once everything else in the beta works, but your chances of getting it faster are much better if you simply get someone with Blender development knowledge to do it.

For example I urge you to create a user and vote for the feature here on BlenderStorm if you like the idea of checkpointing:

I\'ve been talking to a couple of Blender devs with regard to this, and they certainly aren\'t ruling out option two mentioned in my post at that site.

It would be a very nice feature, as my work computer is only on when I am at work... I would use Hibernate, but I run into an error where Windows claims my keyboard driver is preventing it from hibernating. Haven\'t taken the time to figure that one out yet.

Voting now.

It's been over 2 years. Has any progress been made on check pointing?

I did some tests with buffer/tile saving using EXR files. However, it turned out to be non-trivial to restart Blender with those buffers.
Additionally the Blenderstorm site seems to have been redone since, so the issue is no longer on the vote-list.

There are other renderers out there that support checkpointing, though. Personally I think that we are more likely to see one of those supported here than to see checkpointing with Blender (with open source you never know, though - suddenly someone goes ahead and writes the code for it).

Just a quick response to this, and my ideas are fairly stupid most of the time, but maybe have some type of Linux VM to push out as a WU, so if the machine goes to reboot, the VM just gets snapshotted and resumes where it left off last time? Just an idea.

I did some tests like that earlier. The VM and all the added resources from another OS seemed to be a bit of a waste when all we really want is to snapshot a single process. Unfortunately there is no easy crossplatform way to do just that.

For now you can run BOINC with BURP in a VM if you like the idea - or simply hibernate the machine.

Yeah, it all makes sense. Was thinking maybe a VERY minimum linux VM or something... thought I'm not sure how well windows would think about a VM taking 8gb of ram on a 10gb machine, lol!

And I'm fine with how it's going now (minus this last 15 hour WU that ran, lol), everything is good. :)
