There's a tiny weird image of something on the front page that links to this post... strange... I wonder what it is doing there. |

I am very excited to reveal that, as ![]() In order to participate you will need: * At least one computer * A 64bit operating system (official clients will be available for Windows and Linux 2.6.15 or higher) * At least 6 GB of RAM free, preferably more * At least 20 GB of disk space available for BURP * Flatrate internet - or be willing to accept around a 1 GB initial download along with 10MB of uploads every couple of hours (depending on processor speed and work availability). Download/upload speed is not important. In other words: About a factor 10 compared to normal BURP workunits. The entire Sunflower event will last for around 1 year and use the special Sunflower clients. These clients are jam-packed with new features that will later be introduced to the normal clients as well. Alongside the Sunflower event BURP will also be running normal workunits for participants who do not have the hardware required to participate in Sunflower. Anyways, enough of a teaser for now |

* At least 6 GB of RAM free, preferably more Too rich for my blood :( Guess this means I'll be dropping some positions over the next year... Click here to see My Detailed BOINC Stats ![]() |

Exciting news, Janus! Although these hard requirements let me wonder if I can crunch for. Does the 6 GB RAM mean for 1 WU? Then even my 8 GB RAM quad could do only one at a time... Life is Science, and Science rules. To the universe and beyond Proud member of BOINC@Heidelberg My BOINC-Stats ![]() |

Too rich for my blood :( Memory prices are headed for an all-time low this spring. The timing couldn't be better! Does the 6 GB RAM mean for 1 WU? Then even my 8 GB RAM quad could do only one at a time... That's one of the areas where the prototype Sunflower clients will change the way BURP works. The plan is that they will run workunits as a single WU that is utilising all the cores that you assign to BOINC rather than multiple different WUs each taking up a lot of memory but only utilising one core each. So your 8GB quad should be right in the sweet spot for this event. |

Ah, multi-thread-WUs like AQUA then! Brilliant, I'm looking forward to crunch BURPs again. :-) Life is Science, and Science rules. Hosts that qualify for the Sunflower event will soon start to receive the initial data for this movie. This will happen in a way where the data is streamed to the hosts before the actual workunits are released. Upon completion of the download the data will be kept on the host until the end of the Sunflower event and during this time it will be reused in many different sessions. In order for this to work the host must have made at least one scheduler request (i.e. it must be visible on your hosts page) and it must live up to the requirements posted. |

Hosts that qualify for the Sunflower event will soon start to receive the initial data for this movie. ... My quad downloads a 293 MB file right now named "file1882711", but has no tasks. Is this already for the movie? Life is Science, and Science rules. To the universe and beyond Proud member of BOINC@Heidelberg My BOINC-Stats ![]() |

Hosts that qualify for the Sunflower event will soon start to receive the initial data for this movie. ... Yup, a total of around 1GB will be slowly streamed out over the next week or so. [Edit: 2011 Feb 01] First half of the data has been sent now |

When will actual rendering begin? I don't have enough ram yet and I'm trying to wait it out until my next visa billing period ;). Is this a fair indication http://development.burp.renderfarming.net/projects/burp/roadmap ? |
