For most BOINC projects, there is a setting in your account preferences, where you can select which applications(s) you choose to run. This is very handy, especially where there are single-threaded applications and multi-threaded applications. Can this feature please be turned on here at BURP?

It will be in the (near) future, Janus stated somewhere that this is going to happen, but I don't know anymore in which thread it was.

Thanks for the info.

Isn't sunflower the one that will take a really long time? Also, after sunflower, will there be another job using that app? Or does the need for the change become moot?

Well, looking at the remaining sessions it can indeed take another half up to a year - that's my guess.

I take it that you mean there will not be another job using sunflower.

Still, if the current job is going to last another 6 months, I feel the preference should be enabled now, without delay. That is a long 6 months of value that would come out of it, which is a lot.

Unfortunately we're in a feature freeze with regard to the scheduler (and anything else tied into the credit system) right now. Once the current (and scheduled) Sunflower units have cleared out, and a very needed credit correction has been performed, it will free up several dependencies that would (among other things) allow that feature to be turned on.

Understood.

How about this?: Use an app_info.xml (anonymous platform) so that one gets only the app that you want.

That would work as an alternative, until the upgrade. I just need someone to write the app_info.xml for me.

I just need someone to write the app_info.xml for me.

Well, that's somehow pretty easy.
Since I tried it already in the past (for Blender) I still have my one:

<app_info>
<app>
<name>blender</name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>blender_4.79_windows_x86_64.exe</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>blender</app_name>
<version_num>479</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>blender_4.79_windows_x86_64.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
</app_info>

If you want it for Sunflower simply replace the (file)names.
Note how the version_num is written.
A little side effect of using the app_info is the (automatic) deletion of the files from the other app. You can make a backup from it if you don't want a re-download later when you're skipping the app_info.

Oops, sorry, I didn't tried my xml with the new released Blender Windows-version yet, I just noticed after a try of myself that there's something missing.
The zip-file must be somehow involved in the xml also, otherwise it doesn't work - unfortunately I don't know if this works the same way.

Using the anonymous platform is not officially recommended because it is a little difficult to manage (especially around new updates etc) but I'll give a little hint:
The client_state.xml contains mostly everything you need to make your app_info.xml file. Search for and and then finally look up some s for that app_version, you should be able to piece together the rest from there with a little tweaking:

The basic idea is:

|- <-- Plain copy-pasta of general description of the app
|- * <-- A few of these - basically a list of all files used in the app_version
|- <-- Specific app with references to the files above, plenty of copy-pasta going on here too
|- ... <--- Plenty of room here to add another app (and infos + app_version) if you like

Make sure that you ALWAYS check that the version of the .zip matches the version_num in the .xml - if you mess it up and use an old/wrong version it may return incorrect images and that would be really annoying.

Thanks for the hints Janus on how to make the app info file file. I think I have found the parts that are missing however in saying this I am not willing to put them into an app_info file as I am not certain on how they work.

Is it luck of the draw as to whether or not you will pick up the blender work unit? Reason why I am asking this question is because I noticed that a window 7 machine with 16 gig of RAM picked up a task from Session 1566 in saying this I am unsure whether or not the user is using an app_info file. The computer I am referring to is number 3 of the top computers list. The tasks I am referring to are on the second page.

Using an app_info results in only getting WUs from sessions for the chosen app. If I got the right host you mentioned (if he has not changed rank meanwhile) I see that he gets WUs from both apps, so no app_info here.
I guess getting WUs from sessions somehow depends on the priority they are given. I have the feeling that the Blender sessions seem to be always crunched very fast, so it could be they have a higher priority than the Sunflower ones. Is that true, Janus?

Hm, looking at the client_state I got confused a bit. I'm not sure how to include all the stuff needed in the app_info.xml also, it's a bit more complicated here with the zips than on other projects. I don't really need the xml but I want to know how it could work, so I will try it later the day.

Normal workunits run on a larger portion of the farm and are, in fact, treated at the same priority level (or very slightly above) that of the Sunflower units. So they are faster because they are shorter and more machines are working on them.

Well, after some try and errors and a bit logical thinking it seems I got it working! :D
At least there are no more errors in the message log and all needed files stay where they have to be.
Unfortunately it seems there are only WUs for session 1566 available currently, and I have too less memory to get one of these, so I can't really test it to the end.
I'll post the code when I get and return a normal Blender WU successful. ;-)

These 1580-wus do take long, but obviously it worked perfectly, here is it.
But seeing how low the credits are I don't want to crunch with an app_info. I'm not hoping CreditNew does really take that seriously for every wu returned with an app_info...

And here is the code for it:

<app_info>
<app>
<name>blender</name>
<user_friendly_name>blender</user_friendly_name>
<non_cpu_intensive>0</non_cpu_intensive>
</app>

<executable/>

</file_info>

<file_info>
<name>windows_unzip.exe</name>
<nbytes>167936.000000</nbytes>
<max_nbytes>0.000000</max_nbytes>
<status>1</status>
<executable/>
</file_info>

<app_version>
<app_name>blender</app_name>
<version_num>479</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>blender_4.79_windows_x86_64.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>blender_4.79_windows_x86_64.exe.zip</file_name>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>infozip_license</file_name>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>windows_zip.exe</file_name>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>windows_unzip.exe</file_name>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
</app_info>

I'm not sure if the infozip_license-part is really necessary, but since it was deleted one time in my previous trys I guess it is.
