Right now I have 16Gb of RAM in my PC, I am soon to buy 16Gb more for a total of 32Gb - will my client download more work units at once if I have more RAM installed? Right now it downloads and renders about 3 WUs at once - 9Gb RAM used max.
Since renderfarm.fi apparently have had a lot of trouble lately I have only been rendering with 3 of my 8 cores most of the time.

Yes you're correct your computer will download as many work units as it can work on plus you may be a little bit of a buffer. However if you manage to download a sunflower work unit all of your eight cores will work on this task as it is a multithreaded application. In terms of how much work you get will also depend on how much ram you have told Boinc to use.
Have a crunching good day

I think you will be able to crunch more simultaneous WUs with high RAM requirements, but you shouldn't get any more work just because you have more RAM--though you may be able to get work while some other users with less RAM can't. Right now, both BURP and Renderfarm don't have a lot of WUs to send out, so that could be why you don't get a full complement. I'm sure that will change when Renderfarm gets back on their feet and starts to clear the very large backlog of sessions. If you are concerned about idle cores, you might consider one of the science apps, as they generally have much more work available. BURP and Renderfarm have a variable flow of WUs.

How many WUs your computer downloads also has a lot to do with the "Maintain enough work for an additional XX days" setting, but as I said before you won't get much if the project doesn't have any WUs to give in the first place. Since you are only getting work for 3 of 8 cores, I'd say it is a supply problem. BOINC will try to keep all your cores busy unless you have told it to only use so many cores.

In my experience the burp server imposes some kind of hard limit on how many work units it gives you at the same time. For normal Blender WUs its currently 5 WUs for me. All 5 are running but there are still cores and >50% of RAM (of the part which boinc is allowed to use) free. The client actually tries to get more WUs but fails with "Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks" followed by "This Computer has reached a limit on tasks in progress".

So no, adding more RAM won't get you more simultaneously running WUs at some point, at least in my experience.

Has anyone made different experiences with this and got more then 5 boinc tasks running at once? If yes, is any special setting needed for that? I wouldn't mind occupying those other idling cores with some WUs if its just a simple setting or something.
