I joined today and after installing BOINC and creating an account I got message in the News Section:

BURP: Notice from server
Blender needs 9116.00 MB RAM but only 1842.74 MB is available for use.

So I need at least 9.1Gb of RAM for BOINC or else I can't use it for BURP at all?

Today yes, last week we had some work that required only 450MB, next week maybe it will be 200MB or 13GB, who knows. It really depends on the artists who upload work and how detailed that work is.

If you look at the "Sever status" page, it tells you the RAM requirements for each of the sessions being rendered. However, it doesn't break down the available tasks for each session so you might still get a "no work available" type message if there is a session that you have enough RAM for, but there aren't necessarily any tasks available for it at the time. The requirement varies a lot, so don't let it discourage you. Stay attached, and you'll eventually get some work--but make sure you have some other project(s) attached to BOINC to keep your host(s) running through the thin times.
