Right to the facts: No render images/thumbnails appear, when trying to open them directly all I get is an error message from the browser.

The error happens in the gallery thumbnails, the session previews and frame/partial previews from the session.
Images from the frontpage along with other images used for the website work fine, which suggests it's the image caching algorithm. Additionally, the problems began occuring around the time the new image caching was introduced in november, which suggests that is the cause.

Is this still the case?

Sorry for the delay, for some reason the email notification went straight to spam.

Yes, it's still happening, also something I forgot to mention that's probably not important at all - CATS works just fine for me.

Does this happen both while browsing the http and https part of the site? The image thumbnail generator was recently removed from the https test due to some issues.

I'm not very informed on that subject and don't have any specific tools for testing, but when viewing via http:// the browser says different stuff about security than https:// and in both cases I don't see any images.

As another thing to check, when viewing this scene, the URL for the image preview is:
http://xmlrpc.burp.renderfarming.net//static/sessions/2990/frames/0/full

Just in case my browser is somehow getting the wrong/corrupted URL.

I can't seem to reproduce this issue.

If you hit F12 while on the session page, navigate to "Network", click ctrl+shift+R, then click one of the "thumbnail" lines on the left, click the "Headers" tab and then take a screenshot with as much of the text there showing as possible, what does it look like?

If you navigate to http://xmlrpc.burp.renderfarming.net/ do you see a list of files?

Here's an image of the headers tab. Note that I'm not using an english browser, so if it's really necessary I can change the language, however I believe that most information is readable.

I do indeed see a list of files and when I open one without any parameters it loads with an XML error page, as it probably should.

I think you may have been 100% spot on - there was a bug in the image cache system causing the images to not follow the JPEG standard and the cache to fail in certain situations. The weird thing is that most browsers just seemed to ignore it - I really have no idea why yours is different.
From your screenshot I could see that the thumbnails were all a little bit larger than what they were supposed to be - this indicated an issue with the cache sending too much data.

Did this fix it for you?

It didn't change anything in my browser, but I decided to do something I should've done long ago - downloaded the image on my computer. While the windows image viewer failed to open it, IrfanView did just fine, which suggests it's either a problem with my computer or an error with the jpg file generated.

For the record the images also fail in google chrome and microsoft edge.
I think the problem might be related not to the images directly, but rather encoding, considering each of my browser fails but an advanced image viewing program works.

Additionally, here's a link to the image downloaded to my computer for reference - that should help with debugging if the problem is related to the file.

Hah! Well that kinda settles it then - I took a look at the data in the file and the image starts out with the following bytes:
"

Notice: Undefined variable: PROJECT in /mnt/hosting/www/burp_production/html/languages/compiled/pl.po.inc on line 956
"
and I'm not a JPEG format expert but I'm pretty sure that is an error message originating from the Polish language file in the project and shouldn't be part of the image data =)

I'll have to look into how on earth that error ended up in the image

Good find, I decided to not even open the image as I thought I wouldn't have a clue, glad it was resolved and thank you for your time.

Ok, we were using some utility functions from BOINC in the image handling system. It turns out those utility functions loaded all of BOINC's web code into memory and there was an issue with the Polish translation file for the Rules and policies page.

Fixing this bug also improved the performance of the cache a little bit.

You should be able to hit CTRL+SHIFT+R and have images now. BURP without the pictures is a little boring.

Thanks for reporting the bug!

For the record: this fixed all the images that were broken for me before, including the session gallery, project images and frame images.
