I tried this project for the first time overnight and got 167 out of 195 tasks with a status of completed marked as invalid. Looking around the forum I don't see anything obvious to look at to explain this. And I really don't understand the stderr output.

My system:

R7-1700 stock
Ubuntu 16.04 4.13.4-041304-generic

Any help would be appreciated. Not much point running a project if I am gong to have a 85% failure rate.

Seems like a general issue with that session. There's something random in it that causes validation error.

So a week later and these are still being sent out? At least recently, a session has lasted just a few hours before being totally complete. Since these are all junk they keep being sent out.

Have the same issue ; Ubuntu, Ryzen 1700x, enough ram , inconclusive and invalid. My last successful WU was back in October I think.

Very depressive

Currently at ~12-13% invalid from all sent WU's. Kind of absurd.

Although I wonder if the Ryzen CPUs are fairing worse than Intel ones? Should mention the ~12-13% invalid rate is from ~514 total sent WUs; all crunched by various Intel Xeon processors.

I see this is still a problem. Invalid rate sucks arse.

At least give us credit for a WU that was completed fully, but was marked invalid through no fault of the user.

Joined yesterday.

Processed 36 work units.

Just 2 Valid (apparently)

Not that impressed. The outputs seem the same for all failed and valid work units.

Yep, I have 50 Invalids out of 58 WUs I received :( Fucking ridiculous. Very amateurish project it seems.

Is that an attempt to trolling? Or do not you just read? You ignored important information on the main page.
This is a BETA project, certain restrictions apply. Not all uploaded sessions will be rendered right away, sometimes the schedulers are down for maintenance.
We are still in the testing phases and do not yet provide the security and stability of a full-blown BOINC project.

Probably it is more a bit of frustration on our part.

Front page was read, yes it states project is still in BETA.

Copyright for renderfarming.net (as stated at the bottom of this page) starts in 2004, so this project has been running for a long time, maybe not always on BOINC, but a long time never the less.

So in that time I thought things like validation may of been sorted out so our resources are not wasted doing needless work.

Most of my results had up to 8 people process them, but only 2 get credit (this is for nearly all results), that is a lot of hours spent with little return.
Surely that many computers can't be wrong all the time?

Beta or not, getting the validation of work sorted out is part of why a project is in Beta.
After this length of time the validation process should maybe be more streamlined?

Thanks

That session was a non-deterministic Cycles session, it is not the native rendering engine of Blender but a new renderer that has grown in popularity over the recent years. Cycles is only experimentally supported due to it occasionally rendering different images for the same frame. This session had this defect and was switched to a different mode to shut it down as soon as an admin noticed it (check the sessions subforum for a timestamp).

It does indeed look like only one returned result is selected, and it is, but in reality credit is granted retro-actively using a different system called PayDay. Non-deterministic sessions can potentially run amok and generate an infinite number of WUs for each frame. In this case an admin stopped it after just around 8, and there is an automated system in place to stop it after 20 as well.

This issue happens from time to time. It will keep happening until the new Cycles-compatible validator is installed (and probably even a bit after that until it is fully dialed in). The code for it has been written recently but it requires a big change in the validation infrastructure meaning that it also requires changes in our current validator to deploy. Currently we're compressing old sessions and using the old trusty (and very strict) validator to check that the compression went well. The hope is to update to the new version of the old validator as well as the first version of the Cycles validator once that task is done. You can follow the progress on the Server Status page.

We will be using the extra returned results as training data for the new validators.

Thanks Janus,

That explanation answered a lot of questions and explained a lot.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the info Janus.

So are we to expect credit for these invalid resuslts? They ran their full length, error is not on our end by your own admission.

@Janus So...is the PayDay system not working. Previous post you mentioned that is what will give us credit for Completed but Invalid tasks. Or am I mistaken?

Beta or not, if we complete a task but your system is marking Invalids when they aren't (no issues on our end, only the system side), then we should be given credit for work done. Reward your users/donors for resources given to this project please.

Thanks and Regards.

@Janus So...is the PayDay system not working. Previous post you mentioned that is what will give us credit for Completed but Invalid tasks. Or am I mistaken?

PayDay is done manually by Janus, as the name almost calls itself done on a certain day, it is not done automatically. So you may have to wait until Janus decides that a new PayDay may be "executed".
Not sure but I think last time it took several months until it was "worth" it. ;-)
