As far as I know, a render consists of a huge number of floating point operations to get the final result - a 2D image.

According to the graph, today\'s CPUs are way slower than
today\'s GPUs, and luckily, nvidia gave us developers the
ability to use that computational power to play with through releasing CUDA.

Why don\'t we make some use of some GPU power trough BURP?

Needs rewriting blender, that\'s not related to BURP. Are you up to the challenge? If it was easy, it would have been done already.

I do unfortunality not yet have the required skills to code such a thing, but would very much like to learn.

It\'s right that graphics card GPUs of the future will be several factors more computationally capable than their CPU counterparts, but we are still talking special-purpose calculations here. Porting regular applications to GPU-code is still something that you simply do not do because of the insane complexity of stream-programming (You program GPUs using the idea of concurrent data streams, arrays, vectors, manipulators, folding etc).

I know of a few projects working on creating 3D render engines as GPU applications and there\'s at least one of them having an in-development Blender exporter.

So what you are talking about may very well be possible one day, but we are talking years until that day is here.

I can\'t really remember the names, but for some reason Gelato comes to my mind...

Looks like some people have used Gelato with Blender on linux to render stills...
