Looking forward to the test this evening - one question: Is it a test of the download array?

Yes this is exactly what it is. The client will (hopefully) be fetching the files to render off the download array.

Seems like it is not working :-\

The files are being downloaded now for 9 minutes, and still I haven't got a byte of them :( And the website is sluggish...

Could you post a logfile or something?

Not sure what I should post...

I finally managed to get one file of the three, now .exe.zip is being downloaded at 0,7KB/s. And I got an mySQL error "too many connections". Must be some prob, i think the main server cannot cope with the request to redirect the users to mirrors. But still, the mirror I'm downloading from should also be extremely slow :)

Yup seems like hundreds of other users are also trying to download these large files simultaneously.

Actually it seems to be related to the amount of workunits going out in almost no time. MySQL has spawned QUITE a few processes and I guess it simply ran short of resources (whatever they are). The load on the server is almost none, so not sure what is going on here...

Yup all the mirrors are swamped at the moment. Please remember that these are simply testservers - the real download network will be much faster.

I raised the number of processes that MySQL is allowed to use simultaneously to 500. This seems to have corrected the problem. Please post if you see a "connection refused" or "too many connections" error.

The first couple of frames are starting to turn in now. I guess this is a sign that eventually you should all be able to download.

The fastest of the test mirrors is completely (really totally) swamped. It is so swamped with requests that it has started queueing them and dropping them. This doesn't make the situation any better since requests that are dropped halfway trough a download will have to be restarted...
For some odd reason the smaller mirrors act a bit more nicely (slowly however) - they don't drop connections. I assume that those dropped connections are what makes the downloads fail.

This test of the download network will be evaluated and analysed. Already much valueable information has been gathered. Most importantly I'll learn a bit about how servers perform under extreme network load.

A bit of timing information:
With current network utilization download of the actual inputfile takes exactly 1 hour. If this is the first time you participate in BURP you will have to download the client as well (so add a few more hours).
Actual rendertime per frame is just about 45mins on a modern system.
Currently there is almost no return queuing, so returned frames will be uploaded with much greater speed than the download (you should be able to reach 0.5Mbit/s at the moment).

Here is a log of all my BURPing since beginning download of the 4.14 .exe, and .exe.zip. I finally finished the download of the .exe.zip after 5hrs56min. Sorry it's so long, but I figure the more data you are given, the better.

Now I have only to accomplish the download of the 122in0.zip. It keeps getting dropped and starts from 0, so it may take a while. (at whopping .11KBps transfer speeds)

I also have been given 26 WUs, which if this .zip doesn't actually get here, some may expire.

-Note: I have done some manual resumes when faced with extremely long backoff times-

122in0's current elapsed download time is 4hrs43min. I generally get around 25-50% downloaded before it drops.

Please also post your version of BOINC when posting logs - this will help find any patterns in the error (ie. if it is related to a particular version of BOINC for instance).

Oops, sorry about that Janus... CC 4.25.

I find it interesting that the .exe.zip could resume, (and a good thing because it's the larger file) but the 122in0.zip will not. They seem to both be coming from the smaller download servers because their download speeds were similar, (usually within .10KBps of each other) so it appears that some of the smaller servers may be dropping, and others aren't?

122in0.zip is currently at 38% at a blistering .19KBps. I'm expecting a drop any minute. Elapsed download time, 5hrs27min.

Now since the download speed is getting up a bit, the 122in0.zip file is being downloaded more often. It also seems that Boinc is telling me every time a new file size... It used to be something like 2.2MB and the last several times I also get 4.5MB...

Anyway, I still get continuously error messages like this one without one successfull download yet:

Sorry for "spamming" Janus, but you've asked for logs :)

Since about one hour the download is completely down again (after reaching almost continuously 1-2kB/s) and a new error message is coming up: >

You aren't spamming, the more logs the better. It seems we may have hit a BOINC related download problem here (has to do with resuming downloads so cross your fingers that your download doesn't drop - theory is that only downloads that do the entire 122in0.zip in one turn will get trough!)... I'll have to clear it up with David as soon as possible.

Hi Janus,

I doupt that the download drops, because in that case the Boinc Manager says "|BURP|Temporarily failed download of xxx".

Only when it completely finishes the download, it compares the checksum and they figures out that they don't match...
==>
|BURP|Finished download of 122in0.zip
|BURP|Throughput 1376 bytes/sec
|BURP|Giving up on download of 122in0.zip: Downloaded file had wrong size: expected 5233806, got 7912149

Right now it says (since about 4 hours) "06.04.2005 15:38:58|BURP|Message from server: No work available" after it kept constantly saying "06.04.2005 12:25:18|BURP|Message from server: No work available (daily quota exceeded)".

Obviously there are no more 122in0.zip files on the server.... Too bad, I just wanted only one :( Anyone has a file for me just for testing?? ;)

Greetings,
ChipCrusher

Let's just wait and see. I applied a patch to the mirrors that should temporarily work around the problem in the BOINC client.

All of you with problems should
- stop BOINC
- delete the /projects/burp.boinc.dk/122in0.zip if it exists
- start BOINC
- wait forever while it tries to download a new one
- keep an eye on the download, check if it resumes correctly

(and update to at least version 4.19 if you haven't yet done so)

The system will slowly be generating new workunits as the old ones come back with errors. So now it really depends on who gets it first, hehe.
