Hi Janus,

I just upgraded to Vista on my main comptuer, so now I have two computer profiles. I went to merge them together (as they are the same machine) but it\'s not allowing me to.

Any ideas?

New profile:

Old Profile:

Thanks.

It doesn\'t have the same OS, so it\'s not the \"same\" host/machine.

Edit: Have you tried Merge computers by name?

Yea, tried that...

Didn\'t know that the OS made a difference as it\'s still all the same componants.

I couldn\'t help but look at those computers, the thing that stuck out to me since it is all the same computer and parts, did you notice the integer speed?

Old one:
Measured floating point speed 2191.36 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 3842.64 million ops/sec
New one:
Measured floating point speed 2281.47 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 7256.85 million ops/sec

Thats very interesting, it seems there may be a performance improvement by switching to Vista, I assume you went with 64bit?

Also, while you are here, wasn\'t that 121k second WU only running on one processor core at a time?

BOINC won\'t let you merge a computer that has a different operating system installed, even if the network name and hardware are the same. For a while, it wouldn\'t even allow you to merge computers that had XPSP2 over XPSP1.

The work unit in question would have only been running on one core at a time, as BOINC is not optimized to make use of multiprocessor systems the way that other software (like Photoshop, etc.) would. Instead, it runs one application on each core if the user\'s preferences are set to allow this.

Both of these things are limitations of the BOINC system, so you\'d have to talk to the folks at the UC to get them changed.

Yea, I also upgraded Boinc to 5.10.4 which I have seen increases the reported benchmark speed. Dont know if it\'s an optimisation or just a different way to calculate the benchmark.

Yep, it\'s the 64bit version of Ultimate (that didn\'t cost me a $... and it\'s legit - yay, my first legit version of windows since 3.11)

And yes, that 121k WU was using only 1 core, there were three others going at the same time too. I have since reduced it to 3 WU at one time so I have a core left over for the stupid amount of services and processes that Vista has.

Hi, I was able to clean up most of my doublettes - just one is left - but there I
get: Processing wilhelm-xp
Can\'t merge host 17413 into 25554 - they\'re incompatible

Well, they are not incompatible, but identical - any idea, what I did wrong?

You probably did not do anything wrong. I would guess that those two hosts contacted the server out of sequence to make them incompatible.
