After a 2 hour trafficjam on the central server due to a slight issue in the script that syncronizes application files with the mirrors the 4.55 client version should now be available for automated download through BOINC for all officially supported platforms.

This version of the client includes at least the following fixes:

  • Error -10 in the case of other CPU-hungry processes, the ProgressMonitor now bases its kill-decision on CPU-time instead of wall time.
  • Error -9 in the case of temporary errors (this may not cover all the cases where this error appeared, but may fix issues seen on Mac OSX.
  • Progress going backwards (the progress estimation is now more conservative - meaning that it may also wait a bit at the start of very long workunits before starting to update smoothly).
  • Progress estimation has been normalized towards CPUtime, giving a more precise estimate on multicore and hyperthreaded machines.
  • ProgressMonitor now allows twice as complex scenes to be rendered.

Furthermore the Blender version included in the patchset has been upgraded to Blender version 2.44.

If you experience any issues with the 4.55 version of the client please post them here for further investigation.

BOINCmgr still shows 4.50 (Windows XP). I have had it update with the project, but it is not downloading the new version. Is the version displayed maybe wrong? Or am I having some other difficulty?

As far as I know subsurface scattering was changed between 2.43 and 2.44 - in other words: Yes, these two versions may generate wildly different results for some sessions.

Do you still have old work left? In that case the BOINC client will usually continue with the existing Blender version until the next work is being fetched.

Can we run 2.44 optimized for SSE2/3 or will we see wildly different results?

On average we can see a 20% increase with SSE optimization.

The database should have the flags that indicate whether a host supports SSE2, but I don\'t see it for any of my hosts that support SSE3, even though the processor does in fact support it. Regardless, this would require maintaining multiple program versions per platform, since not all of the hosts I have connected support SSE2 instructions. This would be dicey to support if there are client bugs to work out.
