I\'m seriously confused with all the web literature going on about dual core, over clocking, and DDR ram!

About 4 days ago, I\'ve thrown away my AMD 2600+ with its mobo and kept everything else from my old system. Which consisted of 4 x IDE 120 GB drives, one AGP Geforce 5700, and 2 sticks of 512 DDR1 400.

Being the stingy guy that I am, I\'ve opted for an ECS mobo considering its one of the few boards that supports IDE and AGP. And no, I do not consider my self a gamer or an over clocker. I bought an E6600 C2D.

I\'ve sold my 2 sticks of 512 to one shop and added extra bucks and got 2 sticks of 1 gigs, 533 ddr 2 4300.

The memory and FSB are configured as 1:1, and my main current concern right now is would it make a difference if the the ram was configured as dual channel or not? The current MOBO has no dual channel support, and as I\'ve stated earlier, there are too many web literature on this subject with the nay and aye sayers and I can\'t seem to get a conclusive answer!

Running in dual channel mode can as much as double your memory bandwidth (access speed). Actual performance increases will vary depending on what the memory requirements of the programs you are running are. I would expect a gain from running in dual channel mode in almost all cases, however if the MOBO you have selected does not support it I would not be too concerned.

I hope you weren\'t speaking literally when you said that you threw your old CPU and mobo away... There\'s lots of people out there, for whom an Athlon 2600+ would be a huge improvement!

Thanks and I second that!

According to the Sandra tests I ran and various web articles, the FSB can max at 8 GB, I\'m currently almost less than half that rate and the large L-2 cache communicating at 8 GB with the CPU should compensate!

I\'ve seen some various blender benchmarks under different flavors of CPUs and RAMS but it seems the most determining factor is a blender built with SSE2 optimization.

I realize that but not so many people in Saudi are AMD fans!

I\'ll try to bargain with some of the shops and try to maintain a selling point of CPU+MOBO above 100$ which should be fair to both sides!

Otherwise, I might use it as a second boincer instead of making it collect dust!

memory is NOT a limiting factor when paired with a 4MB C2D. Any benchmark site or my own test shows that going from 533mhz 6-6-6-18 Single annel to 1066mhz 5-5-5-15 Dual channel will only have a very small real-world performance gain (less than 20%) even though the memory bandwidth theoretically quadrupled.
