Upgraded to Bonc v4.30

124in0.zip downloaded to 2.244KB.
First work unit had a computational error - though that may have been caused by me.
Second work unit still be calculated.

What makes you think you caused the error?

No luck with my download of 124. Using boinc 4.25. These are my messages:

Hope this helps

My computer locked up while I was doing a software update and after I re-booted it stated there was a calculation error.

The second unit was successful.

Sooooooo late at night now, but I wanted to sit this test out and report back what I noticed. It seems I complete a successful calculation. Although the start was not too clean. I have 2 other boinc projects running here, and they interfered with the start of my burp wu. A log:

The reason for the frequent restarts is that I suspended the other projects in order to run burp. After this I had 2 DOS windows open, and 2 times blender.exe in task manager. Each blender using about 200MB of memory (only 256MB RAM on this box!) my machine grinded near a halt at the limit of its virtual memory (800MB). I closed the first opened DOS windows, thus stopping one of the blender.exe's. After this (making sure to leave my poor memory swapping machine alone :-) ), the WU ran smoohtly to a succesful finish.

Ah yes. BURP units don't like being stopped - no matter how (crash or other projects). The code to stop the unit simply isn't there yet so the unit will usually fail when stopped (except when the core client itself stops the unit it will then be restarted from scratch).

Hi all. Got my first work unit today which showed up in cc 4.30 as computation error. Now I know what that DOS window was all about :) I wont make that mistake again.

My account shows an earlier wu outstanding but there is nothing in the cc?
Also my Linux machine (FC3) can't attach to the project is this as expected?

Good luck with the project.

Each unit takes about 225MB RAM so you shouldn't run more than one simultaneously if your system hasn't got that much memory.

This test doesn't really have anything to do with memory issues, but I've noted that we need a way of predicting the memory footprint better so that the BOINC client will only run one WU if your system can't handle more. Sorry about the inconvenience untill this is implemented.

The blender seems to use less memory than for the work units I did earlier this week. The overall commit charge in task manager is 90MB lower than before. VM size of blender is 280MB (I didn't look before)

The WU sent out now are much larger, aren't they? As it's standing now it will take me 7h30 to finish, compared to 2h/2h30 earlier. I suspended my other projects as a precaution to avoid switching project.

There is something I don't quite understand. I got 3 fresh burp WU in my queue, each time after boinc contacted the scheduler. But the scheduler reported no work available. Also, I haven't downloaded any new files (probably because 124in0.zip is already on my system, right?)

Memory footprint and how much time a WU consumes will depend on a whole bunch of factors. Mainly how many objects and vertices are actually in the particular frame and the "shaders" used on those objects and vertices. In other words even WUs within the same session will have different sizes. For instance some of the frames in session 124 will be able to be completed in just a few seconds and some will use hours and hours.

It really should say "No MORE work available". You were lucky and grabbed the last units. New units are slowly generated all the time, so this can happen several times. They are ripped away whenever they are made available.

Interesting... You crunched the workunit at least up till 75% within 5000 secs. Something strange must have happened afterwards. Are you running other projects than BURP or did you close BOINC while running this test WU?

Running 4 other projects on this host... had time to switch set at 70 minutes that would have exceeded it 3 times over but ..... had all other projects suspended at time of start... using ht... as 1st unit finished and 2nd still crunching I resumed other projects and went to bed. Have increased time to switch to 80 min and might go higher as benchmarks tell me these workunits should finish under an hour

> You crunched the workunit at least up till 75% within 5000 secs. Something strange must have happened afterwards.

You may want to look at the output file- maybe the frame got really complicated three quarters up- that could have slowed it down

(just a guess)

Ok. At least you confirmed that the CPU time limit works as expected, which is a good thing since that limit was difficult to calculate. A limit of a bit more than 3 hours per part seems reasonable.

You can't count on the benchmarks at the moment. I haven't yet figured out how to estimate the amount of time a WU takes. Perhaps it isn't even possible without actually rendering the frame...

I had to detach from project on a P3 due to time to completion was showing me 13 hours+! Dont think this project will work on farm equipment hehe Excuse me if this is in faq but do you plan to have graphics enabled ever so we can see what we are rendering ? and if so whats your timeframe kinda sorta regards

Hy, just reporting that the BOINC Manager is working correctly on timing with the burp units - it gives them the same time as to the other projects.

First unit received, my mistake - closed down the dos window so error was reported. Next unit worked ok, has been reported and credit granted (very short time), now the third unit just paused after 59 minutes and 12 seconds, and has a 2 minute pending time, so this is consistent with the estimated time for the unit, which reads 1h 00' 03"

CPU is 2,7GHz, with WXP sp 2 and I am running all 7 projects (no problem with any one of them) have CC 4.25
Besides, have one more unit, will be for tomorrow ;-)

I have returned a few WU's fine once I upgraded tp 4.30. However just go this error on a WU.

4/16/2005 6:06:18 PM|BURP|Resuming result 124in0.zip__ses0000000124_frm0000000245.wu_0 using blender version 4.14
4/16/2005 6:06:19 PM|BURP|Computation for result 124in0.zip__ses0000000124_frm0000000245.wu finished
4/16/2005 6:06:19 PM|BURP|Unrecoverable error for result 124in0.zip__ses0000000124_frm0000000245.wu_0 ([file_xfer_error] [file_name]124in0.zip__ses0000000124_frm0000000245.wu_0_0[/file_name] [error_code]-1[/error_code] [error_message][/error_message][/file_xfer_error])
4/16/2005 6:06:20 PM|BURP|Deferring communication with project for 59 seconds
4/16/2005 6:07:19 PM|BURP|Sending request to scheduler: http://burp.boinc.dk/burp_cgi/cgi
4/16/2005 6:07:21 PM|BURP|Scheduler RPC to http://burp.boinc.dk/burp_cgi/cgi succeeded
Changed to [] so all would post.

I thing this happened because I accidently closed the DOS window before it started crunching. There are a couple more WU's to crunch, will let you know how they go.

i thought at first that the upgrade to 4.30 had a bug in it (the dos box).

will it close after the wu is finished and uploaded, haven't been able to get another wu yet to try just minimizing the box

anyones thoughts/suggestions?
