I\'ve changed the max number of WUs to 4 - allowing quad cores to run at full power most of the time while still not overqueueing dual and single core machines. Remember that this is merely a temporary solution until BOINC supports limiting to the actual number of CPUs.

Would it be ok to have the limit 4, so that quadcores can have all BURP units? Or, maybe even 6 to have a little extra work?

Seconded from a fellow quad core cruncher :)

Thirded from a fellow quad core! :)

Just came back from vacationing in Thailand and grabbed a decently priced q-6600 freshly packaged 3 days out of Malaysia.

Time to sell my 3 month old dual 6600.

And here I am, with a K6II-233 on my farm!

Actually, I don\'t have a quadcore, just a dual which eats through the BURP units pretty quick. Just want to make sure that everybody\'s got enough BURP work, who wants it (like me).

Have you tried playing with the max_wus_in_progress tag? It does not take into account the number of CPUs but can be used to limit the queue. Somewhere between 2 and 4 would nearly accomplish what you want for most hosts.

That\'s right - it would work as a nice temporary solution; And 4- and 8-core systems mostly shouldn\'t run 4+ instances of Blender anyways.

My patch for max_wus_in_progress did take into account number of CPUs (requested by Renderfarm@Home users), but David took that out. Also, current code is apparently quite different from mine, it now reads the list of in-progress results sent by the client instead of the results the server has as in-progress for that host. So I\'d tell you how to make it check CPU count, but I don\'t know what the code even looks like now :)

max_wus_in_progress was broken (I don\'t know what version of the server BURP uses, so it might be fine here). It was just fixed in [13712].

Yes, I noticed the discussion on the mailing list.
