Being a new BURP member and not fully used to blender yet, I am not certain what I am about to say is much relevant or can be applied with the current rendering process. However, for what I know from my experience with 3d studio max, rendering a scene from several passes/layers (one for specular light, one for diffuse and so on...) can considerably speed up the total rendering time as ram and cpu are dedicated to a narrower task. If a submitted render could be divided into such passes and correctly distributed amongst users for to be composed at the end, perhaps it could be a way to achieve a much more efficient render net.

I\'d appreciate any comments on that...

That\'s true - just like you would usually do you submit each layer in the complex animation for rendering.
If you are suggesting that this process is automated, then I\'m afraid that this is not a planned feature (and likely never will be since how to divide the layers is highly dependent on the renderer used).

Some renderers don\'t even have any layers :P
