I also miss tasks since I have only just started (burp). I was going to not submit anything until it had really long render times but maybe I should do a test.

No planned system tests from my side - most of the development time goes into stuff that is more related to the client at the moment.
You should see some (literally) big tests comming up by the end of next month, though - if the schedule holds; which it usually doesn\'t.

sounds good, i was really bummed out - i thinned out my projects to 50/50 BURP & Einstein... obviously my Einstein numbers went 100% lately :D

get the BURP stuff loaded, and I\'ll re-tweak my processes... I hope to have 2 more 16-way servers online this week :D

THROW SOMETHING BIG OUT THERE!

Heh - you got one fine serverpark there xPOD ;) And I\'m missing BURP sessions aswell ..

I don\'t think people should be afraid to (ab)use BURP right now - it\'s not like it\'s overworked at the moment.

do you guys promote getting more work from any professional render teams? It would be interesting to see us crunch on the latest rendered game demo, movie, etc... plus it may help us get more crunchers if they put some of their content on their systems :)

The current licensing disallows rendering of anything that may be used commercially. This is slightly restrictive and probably means that we will not see stuff like what you mention.

The license will/may be changed at some point. A long discussion thread about this is here.

I cannot say that what you mention will never happen, neither can I promise you that it will. The only thing I can say is that it will not happen right now =)

it makes total sense not to promote any funded crunching, but what if we (BURP) offered some rendering services \'for free\' for some schools and/or students looking to get faster results and learn a bit more about grid computing and the overarching benefits?

I\'m sure there are a lot of creative minds out there with new projects to spin our way...

I don\'t think they create those great effects with Blender...

And since everything you render here is viewable by anyone(!), companies would not like to testrender or render at all in an environment like this.

I am waiting for the Beta or a more open version (Input wise) before I start again trying to convince Janus to let people render .max files :-P

Well .. I don\'t think that would be too hard to convice as long as you find a render-engine that is open source, freely distributable and cross platform (atleast for linux and windows).

Would be a kind of a bummer if everyone who wanted to render max files had to buy a linsence of 3dsmax before they could use boinc (or burp). ;)

Well, why not? If you can render Blender and Max, just give BURP the (optional) path to your 3dsmaxcmd.exe or let it even find out itself if $Programdirectory/Autodesk/3ds Max 9/3dsmaxcmd.exe does exist?

If you can\'t - you can still render .blend projects fine...

BTW:

Royalty-Free API: Gelato’s main Application Program Interface is a modern, C++-based API. To ease training requirements, the API is simple (few calls) and orthogonal (calls are non-overlapping). The API is available at no charge to encourage and foster the development of a wide range of tools for Gelato.

Plug-In I/O Architecture and Multiple Formats: Gelato does not require any specific input or output formats. Instead, it is designed to make use of plug-ins that allow Gelato to read any type of scene file or image input or output. Gelato ships with plug-ins for the most common I/O formats; others are available from third parties; and you can create your own using the API.

Multiple Scene Input Formats: Gelato does not prescribe a specific scene file format, forcing you to convert all data into that format. Instead, Gelato has a simple API for the creation of scene format plug-ins. When a file is input, the plug-in (DSO/DLL) for that format is dynamically loaded and told to read the scene file. Thus, you may store your scene in any format for which there is a plug-in and you may freely mix different files in different formats within a single scene. Available scene file plug-ins include:

* Python Binding: Gelato ships with a scene format plug-in that reads Python scripts that make calls to the Gelato API. This provides a flexible, fully scriptable method for scene input.
* RIB Scene File Reader: A plug-in that allows Gelato to read Renderman scene file formats is available for free.

Ah, and there is also a Blender --> Gelato Project by XYZ http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=14227

sure they do... check out Elephants Dream. i sure wish they would do the next project via distributed computing (but i hear they need 8gb+ machines to do so)
