The apps marked "postponed" are still using CPU and memory.

I just updated most of my hosts to BOINC 7.8.3, and noticed that as soon as I got a BURP task (on two different hosts), tasks from other projects that are suspended to let the BURP work go display the following status:

"Postponed: Waiting to acquire slot directory lock. Another instance may be running."

So far this, has happened on two hosts, although it seems after a while the status will change back to "Waiting to run". This even happens on NCI tasks like QuakeCatcher. So far, I've only noticed it happening while BURP is running, which is also the only multi-threaded app that has been running since the BOINC upgrade.

Is it anything to be concerned about?

We'll need a lot more volunteers to render anything of substance.

Don't mean to beat a dead horse, but define "Fairly recent"; Apple hasn't used nVidia in their main (non-custom) models for 5 years or so...

It's a project that is based on work contributed from the community, and there are a lot of variables that one can select when preparing a Blender session for rendering... As Blender continues to develop, there's always a bit of a learning curve with new versions of the software, and new features. So, there are bound to be some bugs and things that need to be worked out. This is a rather organic project; things change a lot on both sides of the equation, and everything is run by volunteers. Stability can suffer as a result, but there's a policy of making sure that everyone gets credit for work completed, regardless of validation result.

Sounds like you need a backup project... BURP only has work for short periods of time, it's dependent on community submissions.

It probably doesn't help that all of the current Apple offerings are all either Intel or AMD chipsets. They kind of shifted away from nVidia chipsets over the last few years; the last one that I had was my 2012 MacBook Pro, which I sold last year. I also sold my iMac, so there's not much assistance I can give, after years of wishing and wailing about having a Mac client.

I have been thinking about re-acquiring a low-end MacBook or MacBook Air, though it probably wouldn't be a frequent customer.

Any updates on the orphaned sessions? Seems like the creators probably won't miss them, since it's been a year or more for most of them were submitted. I think it's also giving a lot of people the false impression that the project is stalled.

Inconsistent, of course CreditNew has always been. But who crunches just for credits? I just hate the inconsistency.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of crunchers who are concerned about the credits, and I'm sure that we have lost our share over the years. There really isn't any simple answer to the credit question; any system that's chosen will have its opponents, especially when you throw the GPU tasks into the mix.

Although Blender is a really powerful tool, I often wonder if adding another rendering engine (one that would support the check-pointing) would be more effective, though I know that would probably take quite a bit of work on the back end.

On a side note, you should know that Blender is not just the software that does the actual rendering, it's also the modeling tool for creating the scenes to be rendered. In fact, it's a suite with a lot of features, including compositing, video editing and others.

Not having check-pointing is another common reason we lose people; they get frustrated when the work resets after a computer restart. I don't leave my computers on 24/7 (except for one small-time player) and simply sleep/hibernate instead of shutting down to save the progress.

Also, the estimates of completion and time remaining in BOINC are very unreliable. I've found that a good way to figure our how long a task will take, is to look at the average run times on the server status page. If you want to really get in the weeds, you can wait until a wing-man has finished the unit and compare your CPU performance to his. Even among processors of the same class/capability, there will be some variation in the render because different frames will take different amounts of computing power based on their complexity.

The CPU apps are multi-threaded, so that's a plus--we can always use your help. Also, spread the word! We need both crunchers, and animators to submit new sessions to be rendered.

Unfortunately, the progress estimator doesn't work so both the percentage and remaining time estimations are complete rubbish. Check-pointing is also not supported at this time, due to limitations in the software.

It has taken quite a while to get to the point where it is even possible to work on this issue because it requires a change to the compute cluster that BURP is hosted on. Just yesterday I began the process of purchasing the required hardware. Still have no idea how to fund this kind of thing, it is the largest investment into the infrastructure of BURP so far - suggestions are welcome.

For starters, you could re-open the donation option. Probably could have gotten some support from the Bitcoin Utopia folk as well (as controversial as the BOINC community found them) if they were still around. Surely, there are still some loyal fans out there who'd be willing to help out with the upgrade.

Second issue: Credit. This is mostly related to BOINC and not so much content creators but it takes a lot of time that could otherwise have been used to add other features. The Payday credit algorithm is really pulling some teeth. I find it annoying but also somewhat important because the default BOINC CreditNew algorithm really isn't performing well in our case. When adding GPUs to the mix it just becomes 10 times worse.

Another touchy subject with some BOINC die-hards, though I personally think that it should be a secondary consideration to optimizing the rendering production.

It sounds like there is much that some dedicated volunteers could assist with; we just have to find them. Perhaps this is where making inroads with the Blender community could be useful, since they would have an interest in furthering the development of BURP/BARF.

Is Janis the owner of it all now?!?! Maybe a chat with him would help?

He's the founder, been in charge since the beginning. I'm sure he would appreciate any help we could provide, to help with the promotion.

Get some animators interested; as I said before, had much better connections with the Blender community. If the Blender community is on board, we'll get more sessions to render, and hopefully also people interested in the development of the software to provide new features.

Things might move a little faster around here, both in available work and software development, if there were a larger following from the Blender community. That's one thing that really had going for it; lots of work because they had lots of contacts with the Blender institute, and universities teaching Blender. Although, they didn't have enough support from their own administrators in the end.

They certainly had a good marketing team, and I'm sure they probably had some connections through the University--students and the like.

If it makes you feel any better, I am less concerned about the credit showing up quickly, and more concerned about not having anything to render for a couple days now. ;-)

I wonder where all the animators that were submitting projects to went... Seems like there was rarely a shortage of projects to crunch--that is, until everything shut down mysteriously.
