From the top of my head there's one known issue that could cause BOINC to send an "aborted by user" message even without user interaction and that is if you have your preferences set to allow less memory usage while the computer is in use (and there's a lot of things that could cause it to be "in use") than if it is idle.

BOINC will see that not enough memory is available for BURP and will abort the workunit if "Leave apps in memory while suspended" is not enabled.

Could you check if "Leave apps in memory" is already enabled and the memory settings are set to the same for active/inactive use of the machine? That should avoid the issue I'm thinking about. It may, however, be something completely different.

leave app in mem is checked, boinc gets 100% of everything all the time, in use or not in use. given that that computer has only been running boinc for 2 or 3 weeks boinc may not have worked everything out yet. i'll leave it be for now and see what happends. by the way I did not know boinc could do that on it own.
learn something new every day.:)
