Recently the DB server ran into some memory related problems and it became apparent that we are probably going to hit that memory limit again at some other time even though the problems faced in this test will now be fixed.

Basicly there is a single large table that stores all workunit "results" that are in progress. When a lot of results are sent out at the same time this table will grow in size. We would also like to store at least a couple of months of statistical and debug data from that table.
Furthermore the CPU isn't that active on that host, so in the future (when a linux client is ready) it will be made to function as an in-house renderer - in other words it will be able to help out with the rendering without having to spend extra time downloading and uploading results since it is wired directly to the result server with 1Gbit network.

At the moment this host is completely maxed out at 1GB of memory usage with 200MB in the swap file. It has become increasingly clear that it will need a memory upgrade.
The plan is to make this upgrade next Tuesday (the 16th of August 2005).

However, server-class memory is expensive so I won't be able to afford paying all of it myself.
So this is your chance to influence the project directly. If you would like to contribute it doesn't matter how small an amount of money you give - all of it adds up!

Everyone who donate will get their usernames on the donation history page.

Take a look at the "Make a donation"-page to check out the progress or make a donation.

I did a donation of 5 Euro some minutes ago.
Take it as a seed and let it grow!

Thanks Raimund - your donations are really making a difference!

Some technical information for those who would like to know:

The DB server is currently running with 2x512MB PC3200 CL2 184-pin DDR RAM in a dualchannel configuration running a bit faster than 400Mhz.

After the upgrade the DB server will have:
- 2x512MB PC3200 CL2 @ 400MHz
- 2x1GB PC3200 CL2 @ 400MHz
giving it a combined total of 3GB of RAM - all of it running in dualchannel-mode for maximum throughput.

I tried to make a donation through the donate page, however PayPal kept telling me "You must enter a quantity of at least one." and wouldn't let me.

Did you fill out the entire form on the "Make a donation"-page? If so, what browser do you use?

I filled out all of the form apart from Address 2, and tried it in Opera 7.54 and IE 6.

I just tried it again and it worked, so I don't know what happened, although I have been having quite a few computer problems, and have had to restart numerous times tonight.

No, my boot records decided to die on me. So I had to repair the boot stuff, fix windows, and make sure all the hardware was working again.

BURP seems to be running fine :)

Sounds nasty - you are sure you don't have some kind of virus?

I just installed a new hard drive, so I think that's what did it, however I will run a thorough virus scan. Thanks for reminding me about that, I was just pleased to get my computer up and running again.

Ah yes, that would make sense. Windows doesn't like changing partition or drive numbers...

times tonight.

Tried this afternoon and now, no chance, it stopped with telling "you must specify quantity"

XP and IE6 fixed.
Made hardcopy of the page.

What can we do?

{I don't have any problem with boot records...;-)}

Now that's really odd. Could you walk me through what you did - exactly, step for step?

I donated 10€, let's hope you will soon have all the money you need. ;)

@Mahray: Did you try it again? I got an error page telling me that PayPal would have "temporarily problems" - however everything worked fine (I received an email and when I logged in, the transactions were already finished).

I hope that it will be possible.

Are anyone still having the "You must specify a quantity..."-problem?

10% already donated.
Come on guys, if everybody just donates 1 Euro, there should be more than enough money to by the memory upgrade.

Maybe Janus should put up a more eye-catching announcement on the main page with some info why it is important to have that upgrade instead of just linking to this thread. BTW: Is "newest first" still default for this board? If so, anyone who clicks on the link will see my posting on top of all other and Janus' (important) explanations on the bottom.

Oh and for my previous reply: Just ignore about "trying again" - I read over that Mahray was already able to donate. ;)
